Global gradients in intertidal species richness and functional groups

چکیده

Whether global latitudinal diversity gradients exist in rocky intertidal ?-diversity and across functional groups remains unknown. Using literature data from 433 sites, we investigated patterns 155° of latitude, whether local-scale or global-scale structuring processes control ?-diversity. We, furthermore, how the relative composition changes with latitude. ?-Diversity differed among hemispheres a mid-latitudinal peak north, non-significant unimodal pattern south, but there was no support for tropical-to-polar decrease Although drivers had discernible effect, significantly affected ?-diversity, our results reveal that are outweighed by local processes. In contrast to patterns, species richness three (predators, grazers, suspension feeders) declined coinciding an inverse gradient algae. Polar tropical were sparse, more sampling is required improve knowledge marine biodiversity.

Elevational Gradients in Species Richness

The abiotic and biotic gradients on mountains have enormous potential to improve our understanding of species distributions, species richness patterns and conservation. Here we describe how abiotic factors change with elevation, how flora and fauna respond to these changes and how elevational species richness patterns have been studied to uncover drivers of biodiversity. There are four main tre...

Amphibian species richness across environmental gradients

Large-scale field patterns are a fundamental source of inferences on processes responsible for variation in species richness among habitats. We examined species richness of larval amphibian communities in 37 ponds over seven years on the Univ. of Michigan’s E. S. George Reserve. Ordination of the community incidence matrix indicated a strong major axis of variation in species associations that ...

Abundance and Species Richness of Intertidal Gastropods in Qeshm Island, the Persian Gulf, Before and After Cyclone Gonu (2007-2008)

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of cyclone Gonu on species diversity and abundance of gastropods in the Qeshm Island, northern Persian Gulf, on the occasion of the occurrence of super cyclonic and strongest reported storm- Gonu- during 1-4, June 2007 in the eastern Arabian Sea. Samples were collected before the Gonu storm (late May and early June 2007) and twice ...

Large-scale species-richness gradients in the Atlantic Ocean.

The increase in species richness from the poles to the Equator has been observed in numerous terrestrial and aquatic taxa. A number of different hypotheses have been put forward as explanations for this trend, e.g. area and energy availability. However, whether these hypotheses apply to large spatial scales in marine environments remains unclear. The present study shows a clear latitudinal grad...

Geomorphic controls on elevational gradients of species richness.

Elevational gradients of biodiversity have been widely investigated, and yet a clear interpretation of the biotic and abiotic factors that determine how species richness varies with elevation is still elusive. In mountainous landscapes, habitats at different elevations are characterized by different areal extent and connectivity properties, key drivers of biodiversity, as predicted by metacommu...
